  • BOYS' BASKETBALL: West Canada Valley defeats Central Valley Academy

  • ILION, N.Y. — A 13-0 run in the first quarter provided the spark for the West Canada Valley Indians in Tuesday’s 60-40 win over the Central Valley Academy Thunder.
    The Indians trailed in the early going against the former Mohawk Mohicans and Ilion Golden Bombers. The run put West Canada valley in the lead and the Indians never gave it back. They led by as many as 14 points in the first half before Central Valley scored six of the final seven points. The Thunder went to the locker room trailing 30-21 following Tyler Murray’s putback at the buzzer.
    Another West Canada Valley run started in the middle of the third quarter. With the Indians leading 38-27, Michael Sternberg scored off an inbounding play and and Josh Sudakow added a basket in transition, prompting Thunder coach Luke Judd to call a timeout. Another basket by Sternberg stretched the margin to 17 points and the third quarter ended with the Indians leading 49-31.
    West Canada Valley got up by 25 points in the fourth quarter before both teams emptied their benches.
    High-scorer Ryan Grogan had 14 points and four assists for West Canada valley. Jordan Yaworski scored 11 points, Sternberg had 10 points and six rebounds, Alex Williams had nine points, seven rebounds and three steals, and Sudakow led the team with eight rebounds.
    Mitchell Werenczak led Central Valley Academy with 13 points. Ryan Sponburgh had six assists in his first varsity start.
    The win was the first for West Canada Valley coach D.J. Shepardson against Judd, his classmate at Little Falls High School. Judd’s Mohawk team defeated West Canada Valley twice during the regular season and again in the Section III playoffs during Shepardson’s first varsity season last winter.
    Central Valley Academy takes on Cooperstown Friday while West Canada Valley plays at Clinton.
