CANAJOHARIE, N.Y. — The Galway Golden Eagles built a double-digit lead before halftime Saturday and defeated Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville 54-39 in the consolation game at the Canajoharie Tip-Off Tournament.
The Golden Eagles (1-1) led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter and 30-15 at halftime before the Wolves (0-2) played them even through the second half. Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville coach Kelly LaCoppola said his team picked up its play in the middle of the second quarter.
Rylie Smith scored a game-high 18 points for the Wolves and earned a spot on the tournament’s all-star team. Freshman Mahrari Freeman added 10 points.
Erica Chase scored 13 points for Galway and was selected as a tournament all-star. Felicia Snyder scored 10 points.
The team will meet again Friday in Galway to open Western Athletic Conference play.
