EAST HERKIMER, N.Y. — AYSO Area 3G and the Center State Conference staged their 13th annual Senior Games Oct. 29 and 30 at the Herkimer Elementary School athletic complex.
The event recognizes senior soccer players from the various schools throughout the CSC. On Oct. 29, the event hosted 54 senior girls coming from as far away as Adirondack and Sherburne-Earlville. With the formation of four teams, the athletes were able to play two 50-minute games officiated by volunteers from the Mohawk Valley Soccer Referee Association. Central Valley Academy’s Teigha Ward scored nine goals for her team, five in the first game and four in the second.
The following night 35 boys played under a similar format with eight-on-eight games. Mt. Markham Mustang Kris Pontero scored seven goals on the night, including five in the Red team’s 7-1 win over Green; Red went 2-0 while Blue and Yellow each won once. Other multiple scores included Jordan Manikas (four) and Park Summers (two) of Cooperstown, and Jai Ahluwalia (two) of Little Falls for the Yellow team; and Owen D. Young’s Marty Collins who had two goals for the Blue. Felipe Zenteno and Ted Liberty from Central Valley Academy scored goals for the Blue and Yellow, respectively; Sherburne-Earlville’s Elijah Morris, Remsen’s Steve Gothan and Mt. Markham’s Matt Bleaking scored for the Red; and Herkimer’s Dan Netti, Waterville’s Alex Nasypany, Adirondack’s Elliott Hernandez and Central Valley Academy’s Marshall Sterling all scored for the Green.
The Area 3G board would like to express its gratitude to the Herkimer Central School District for its continued support of the event; the East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department for having a staff on hand both nights; Paesano’s Pizza of Mohawk for its food donation and continued support of the AYSO program and philosophies; the referees from the Mohawk Valley Soccer Referee Association; all AYSO volunteers; and the athletes and their parents for participating.
