CHITTENANGO, N.Y. — Stewart Wright had a goal and an assist for top-seeded Fabius-Pompey Friday and the Falcons defeated West Canada Valley’s Indians 3-1 in the Section III Class C final at Chittenango High School.
Conor Larkin and Brad Cleland also scored for the defending champions who owned possession for the majority of the match but were held to one goal because of the play of West Canada Valley goalkeeper Mike Sternberg. The senior keeper had five saves on six shots — including several dramatic and crowd-moving stops to help the first-time finalists keep the game close on the scoreboard.
Sternberg was named the tournament’s most valuable player for the third-seeded Indians, who finished their season at 10-5-1.
“They’re unmarkable,” Sternberg said of Fabius-Pompey (17-1-1). “They’re a good team.”
The only blemish through the first 40 minutes was Larkin’s goal on an assist from Wright with 16:59 remaining. Cleland gave Fabius a 2-0 lead with 21:01 left in the second half.
Jacob Gorinshek cut Fabius-Pompey’s lead to 2-1 with West Canada Valley’s goal with 16:55 left, but Wright found the back of the net 32 seconds later to seal the victory.
Sternberg continued to be a strong, stand-up presence in goal in the second half before Cleland and Wright broke through with their goals. Sternberg came out of the goal early in the second half to make a sliding block save on Wright, and he survived a flurry around the net a few minutes later.
“I was ready for anything,” he said. “This was it, this was the last game.”
