  • Schools receive professional development grant

  • Teachers and administrators from the Central Valley and Herkimer school districts will join together in a BOCES-led consortium aimed at improving instructional practice through collaborative regional professional development thanks to a two-year, $1,015,904 grant from the New York State Department of Education.
    Herkimer BOCES will lead the two districts in the Leaders in Educator Advancement and Development Consortium.
    The Strengthening Teacher and Leader Effectiveness 2 grant was intended to support New York school districts in developing and implementing career ladder programs leaders for teachers and principals.
    Statewide, 33 individual school districts and six BOCES-led consortia received $24.8 million for the STLE 2 Program.
    “Through this program, not only will teachers and principals receive high-caliber professional training,” said Herkimer BOCES Superintendent Mark Vivacqua, “they will have the opportunity to collaborate with their highly effective peers in our region in finding solutions to educational challenges and improving instructional practice.”
    Consortium participants will partake in regional professional learning communities facilitated by the Capital Area School Development Association and receive training and support from the College of Saint Rose Thelma P. Lally School of Education in implementing action research in their schools and classrooms. BOCES educational support services will provide additional training, coaching and support to consortium districts.
    Through a career-ladder program in each district, teachers and principals will share their learning with educators in their home districts, building a network of peer professional development that can be sustained into the future.
    The grant was written in partnership with the Capital Region BOCES Grants and Development Service.
