  • The Little Falls AARP conducted its monthly membership meeting on Oct. 14 at St. Paul’s Universalist Church, with 24 people in attendance.
A covered dish luncheon preceded the meeting.
The guest speaker was Jean Mihevc, who spoke on the Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program for Medicare beneficiaries. HIICAP is administered through Catholic Charities in Ilion.
The current open enrollment period, Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, allows Medicare beneficiaries to change their Medicare Advantage Plan or prescription drug plan since their current plan may have changed its coverage or their personal needs may have changed.
In Herkimer County, there are 26 different drug plans to choose from. The HIICAP staff is available free of charge to help navigate the system so seniors can select a drug plan to meet their medical and financial needs beginning Jan. 1, 2014.
The speaker said they can also help with two other programs available to qualified seniors. The Medicare Savings Program, based on gross income only, pays the Medicare premiums for those who qualify. The Extra Help program will help individuals pay the premiums for their drug plan, if they qualify based on total asset limits.
The speaker said the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, does not affect seniors on Medicare.
Seniors needing assistance should call Catholic Charities at 894-9917. Callers are being advised to be prepared to leave a message and to be patient. The HIICAP staff is busy during this open enrollment period and it may take a couple of days for them to return a call.
Chaplain Ann Kazmerski’s reading was “Lord of the Harvest.”
Community Service Chairperson Florence Rohacek reported two cards were sent to residents celebrating their birthdays at the Alpine Nursing Rehabilitation Center. The 50-50 winner was Teresa Carrig.
Mayor Robert Peters will be the guest speaker at the next membership meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 11 at the Universalist Church. Guests are welcome. The executive board will convene at 12:30 p.m., prior to the meeting.
