  • The Herkimer County Humane Society will conduct a “Back in Black,” promotion during the entire month of November to highlight adoptable black dogs and cats.
The humane society will offer discount adoption fees of $65 for black dogs (a $15 discount) and $50 for black cats (a $10 discount).
Black cats and dogs can make wonderful pets, but they often wait longer for homes than lighter colored animals, according to a news release.
For the third year in a row, national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society will support more than 175 local animal rescue groups and municipal shelters across the country, including the Herkimer County Humane Society. in showcasing black cats and dogs.
“All of us in animal rescue know this is true, that black cats and black dogs routinely get overlooked by potential adopters,” said Jodi Flo, secretary of the Herkimer County Humane Society Board of Directors, in the release. “And yet, famous leaders favored black pets. For instance during World War II, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had a black dog and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill had a black cat. Both pets actually sat in on strategic meetings.”
Then there are the positive legends, said Flo, such as the Gurt Dog of Somerset, England who protected children, and the tale of fishermen’s wives who kept black cats because they believed they protected their husbands at sea.
“Come meet the Herkimer County Humane Society’s black dogs and cats and create a legend of your own,” said Flo.
Last year through the Back in Black adoption event, more than 1,250 pets found homes nationwide, and the participating groups saw how the Back in Black promotion helped animals go home.
The Herkimer County Humane Society is a participating member of the No More Homeless Pets Network, a program of Best Friends Animal Society that offers help and support to animal rescue groups that save lives in their communities.
All adoption procedures remain in effect, including the checking of references and completion of adoption questionnaire. For more information, contact the shelter at 866-3255.
