  • FRANKFORT, N.Y. — The General Brown Lions made just enough plays Friday night to steal a Section III playoff win on the road.
The Lions, seeded fifth In Class C, held on for a 14-12 victory over Frankfort-Schuyler’s Maroon Knights by breaking up a two-point conversion pass and recovering an onsides kick in the game’s final 3 1/2 minutes.
The Lions (7-1) led 7-6 at halftime and expanded their lead by driving for a score on the opening possession of the second half. Frankfort-Schuyler’s first attempt at an onsides kick was unsuccessful as the ball hit Lion Rob Pickeral in the numbers and the lineman immediately fell on it to cover it up. General Brown then drove 53 yards in 12 plays and added a second Zech Pitre one-yard touchdown plunge. Jacob Wojosinski’s kick made the score 14-6.
“We got down eight points and it seemed like they had the ball the entire second half,” Frankfort-Schuyler coach Jeff LaGase said.
Dylan Heath’s interception put the Lions’ offense back on the field at near the midfield stripe but general Brown would turn the ball over on downs when Evan Will incomplete on back-to-back plays from the Maroon Knights’ 20-yard line.
The Lions threatened again early in the fourth quarter after a short Frankfort-Schuyler punt started a drive at the Maroon Knights’ 30. Facing fourth-and-six from the 12, Heath was stopped short of the first down and the ball went back over one downs. The next drive started with a 24-yard Joe DeSarro-to-Rich Morocco pass but the Maroon Knights would advance no farther before turning the ball back over on downs at the 32 with 4 1/2 minutes left to play.
Frankfort-Schuyler (5-3) caught the break it needed when Pitre dropped a handoff from Will in the backfield and Maroon Knight Ralph Walker pounced on the ball.
DeSarro sent Morocco streaking along the home sideline on the next play and the pair connected on a 76-yard touchdown pass. Morocco outran Pitre’s dive for ankles at the General Brown 30 and ran uncontested the rest of the length of the field.
Trailing by two points with 3:12 on the clock, the Maroon Knights called a timeout to set up their conversion attempt. DeSarro dropped back and threw again, this time to the right side where Michael Irons was stationed in the end zone. General Brown’s Ryan Cumberbatch came around the receiver’s right shoulder and reached across to bat the ball down before Irons could haul in the pass.
Once again, the Maroon Knights opted for the onsides kick. The ball failed to travel to required 10 yards and General Brown took possession at the Frankfort-Schuyler 46. A short run by Joe Pitre gave the Lions a first down and forced Frankfort-Schuyler to use its remaining timeouts. After the final timeout, Zech Pitre ran for another first down and Will kneeled twice to run out the clock.
Page 2 of 2 - Frankfort-Schuyler scored first as the teams traded touchdowns in the opening period. DeSarro’s nine-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tim Flihan was followed by a failed two-point try and General Brown took the lead on Wojosinski’s kick after the first Pitre touchdown.
Mitchel Shortt ran for 71 yards for Frankfort-Schuyler but left the game on the opening drive of the second half. Morocco caught four passes 103 yards and DeSarro passed for 121. Zach Perri sacked Will once and recovered a fumble.
