Sophie Devereaux just became enemy No. 1 on The Originals.
"Everything that brought us here to New Orleans was a lie," Elijah (Daniel Gillies) tells his family in the final scene of Tuesday's episode. "This story Sophie Devereaux fabricated, this struggle for control in the French Quarter, this war between the vampires and the witches, wasn't over territory at all. This was over Davina."
On Tuesday's episode "Sinners and Saints," we finally learned why Davina (Danielle Campbell) was so powerful and so protected by Marcel (Charles Michael Davis). Flashbacks revealed that the witches nearly completed a ritual that killed several young girls, including Sophie's niece. But before it finished, Marcel swooped in and saved young Davina - the final girl whose death would complete The Harvest - and as a result, she gained all the power from the girls who died before her. For Sophie's part, her main goal is to now complete the next phase of the ritual, which will bring her niece back but result in the death of Davina - something the Original family does not want to happen. So how does Sophie (Daniella Pineda) keep herself safe amid all the new information? Plus: Sophie and Marcel have a romantic past?!
Sophie and Marcel. Did you see that coming? Daniella Pineda: Not at all because in the first episode he's a total d--- and kills Sophie's sister! I was in total shock when I found out about the sex scene, like I have to get in shape. That was the sexiest scene I've been in.
How will Sophie keep herself safe from the Original family now that they know her motives? Pineda: For the time being, her link to Hayley is the only leverage she has on anyone else. She also needs to make amends with them - that's definitely in my character's interest. She wants to get on their good side or she's gone.
Page 2 of 2 - Is she really supporting Hayley or is that part of her master plan? Pineda: She desperately wants to keep the baby alive. What makes Sophie a good person deep down is that she wants the baby to be safe and she won't use anything to threaten the baby's life. She's definitely Team Hayley and at the end of the day, whatever Sophie is planning is for the greater good. Her interests don't come from a place of greed.
That final scene was a heartbreaker. How was it to film? Pineda: We had to shoot that in 4 in the morning. Chris Grismer was the director and it was maybe 2:30 a.m. and he was like, "See that tower up there?" It was a giant rain tower and he's like, "That's going to go on you." I was shivering, but it looks really cool.
What's coming up for Sophie? Pineda: She has to perform The Harvest, if she can, because The Harvest will appease her ancestors and will also give strength to everybody. Our magic will then be more powerful so we can go after Marcel. I will say that she's already between a rock and a hard place and as the episodes continue she gets further and further into a difficult spot. Something has to drastically change with what she's doing and her approach, so I think my character is going to go through the biggest transformation maybe more than everyone else.
The Originals airs on Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
