  • NEWPORT, N.Y. — This time, the West Canada Valley Indians held on.
Two days after the one-year anniversary of a stunning Section III playoff loss to Mt. Markham, the Indians, seeded third, held on to win 3-2 on their home field and earn a spot in the Class C semifinals.
“It feels good to get a win,” said West Canada Valley coach Dustin Cool who notched his first playoff victory as a varsity player or coach.
The win also puts West Canada Valley in the semifinals of the section boys’ soccer playoffs for the first time.
The Indians (10-6-1) led 2-0 at halftime Friday on goals scored by Alex Williams — with a Josh Sudakow assist — and Matt Barocsi. Tyler Wright added a goal 8:11 into the second half off Jacob Gorinshek’s flick off a throw-in and West Canada valley led 3-0.
Mt. Markham (6-11-1) would answer Wright’s goal with one of its own scored by Kris Pontero 88 seconds later.
The score remained 3-1 into the final 10 minutes . David Delia scored with a header for the Mustangs to cut the margin to a single goal and Mt. Markham had another close call three minutes later.
Both Mt. Markham goals were set up by Jacob Allen throw-ins.
West Canada Valley outshot the Mustangs 22-13. Michael Sternberg was credited with 13 saves for the Indians while Mike Gras had 11 for the Mustangs.
Mt. Markham trailed 1-0 in last year’s opening round before Tyler Plows tied the match with 2 1/2 minutes remaining in regulation, Plows, now playing at SUNYIT, scored again in the second overtime period to give the Mustangs the victory.
West Canada Valley will meet either Cooperstown or Hamilton/Morrisville-Eaton, the No. 2 seed, at a neutral site Tuesday or Wednesday.
