  • GLENVILLE, N.Y. — The Canajoharie Cougars outlasted Mekeel Christian Academy Wednesday and advanced in the Class C playoffs in Section II with a shootout victory at Maalwyck Park.
The teams played to a 1-all tie through regulation and two 15-minute overtime periods. The first round of penalty kicks also produced a tie and Canajoharie (3-13-1) took the upper hand when goalkeeper Sam May converted on the Cougars’ sixth kick. Needing a successful conversion in the sudden death round of the shootout, the Lions’ final kick hit the post.
May made 16 saves for Canajoharie and kept Mekeel Christian Academy off the board after the Lions had taken a 1-0 lead on Jordan Ahlquist’s goal in the first half.
Gordon Trahan tied the game with a header assisted by Logan Sala.
Jakob Kahler made eight saves for the Lions (3-12-2) who lost their final nine matches of the season.
Seeded at the bottom of a 17-team field, the Cougars’ next stop is Lake George Friday where Canajoharie will meet the tournament’s No. 1 seed.
