  • GIRLS' SOCCER ROUNDUP: Sauquoit Valley wins its own tournament

  • SAUQUOIT, N.Y. — The Sauquoit Valley Indians won the championship at their own end-of-season tournament with a 2-1 victory over the New Hartford Spartans Saturday.
    Jenna Mazza and Kelly Brennan each scored a goal for the Indians (14-2-0). Danielle Ricci contributed an assist and Alyson Gaffney made nine saves.
    Alysa Keady scored a goal in the second-half for New Hartford (9-5-2) with an assist from Christina Paul. Dana Del Genio and Gabby Hobika combined to make nine saves.
    New Hartford’s Mallory Max and Sauquoit Valley’s Jordan Talma were named the tournament’s outstanding offensive an defensive players, respectively. Tournament all-star picks included Sauquoit Valley’s Abby Mielnicki, Serena Kiss, Nakeya Stedman and Brennan, New Hartford’s Keady, Max and Lauren Vedette, Central Valley Academy’s Teigha Ward and Nicole Doolen, and Cooperstown’s Katie Kleban and Jordian Siver.
    SAUQUOIT, N.Y. — Teigha Ward scored five goals Saturday in the consolation match at Sauquoit Valley’s tournament and the Central Valley Academy Thunder defeated Cooperstown’s Hawkeyes claimed third place.
    Ward also had an assist for the Thunder (13-3-0). Rachael Phillips had three assists, Nicole Doolen had a goal and two assists, Rachael Thorp and Brandy Urich each scored a goal, and Nicole Wren had two assists.
    Katie Kleban made 17 saves for Cooperstown.
    Ward, Doolen, Kleban and Cooperstown’s Jordian Siver were named to the tournament’s all-star team.
