  • POLAND, N.Y. — Cooperstown placed two runners among the top five finishers Saturday and the Hawkeyes won the Center State Conference’s championship meet in the Russia Town Park.
Led by second-place finisher Kristin Ratliff and fifth-place finisher Samantha Fanion, the Hawkeyes topped a field of 13 complete teams with a point total of 54. Canastota was second with 89 and defending champion Sauquoit Valley was third with 101.
Sage Hurta of Hamilton paced the field of 102 runners with her time of 19:08.4 on the 2.95-mile course. Hurta did not run last year’s league meet but placed third two years ago behind Marissa Jones of Sauquoit Valley and Meghann Tanner of Adirondack. Jones placed seventh in Saturday’s race.
Ratliff was the only other runner to break 20 minutes. Tanner ran third, the third year in a row she has finished at least that high, and Makenna Cooley of Remsen was fourth. The rest of the top 10 finishers included Remsen’s Anna Roberts, Clinton’s Morgan Roy, Canastota’s Rachel Bargabos and Poland’s Shiane Irwin.
Sadie Lincourt was the top finisher for Central Valley Academy in 19th place and the Thunder finished fourth in the team competition. Poland was fifth, Little Falls eighth and Herkimer 12th.
Top finishers for other area teams included Natasha Scalice in 27th place for Little Falls, Geralynn Swald in 35th place for Herkimer and Meghan Rodick in 38th place for Mt. Markham. Poland’s Tara Seigle ran 14th overall and Central Valley Academy teammates Dana Juby and Alexandra Bandel crossed the finish line back-to-back in 28th and 29th places.
Sauquoit Valley won the junior varsity and modified team competitions. Sauquoit Valley teammates Renee Henck and Jennifer Ferro finished 1-2 in the junior varsity race and Old Forge’s Laura Levi won the modified run.
