  • Indium Corporation hosted 45 students and teachers from Herkimer BOCES on Oct. 8 as part of their celebration of National Manufacturing Day.
Students toured Indium Corporation’s advanced manufacturing facility in the Utica Business Park.
The tour exposed students to the skills required to take advantage of career opportunities in advanced manufacturing in the Mohawk Valley, according to a news release.
The tour emphasized five key components of a high-performance manufacturing organization — the skills, aptitudes, and abilities of a diverse workforce, the importance of accurately addressing customers’ needs, the transformation of raw materials to finished goods, the role of advanced manufacturing in the global market and how processes optimize efficiencies, effectiveness, customer satisfaction and profits, according to the release.
Students observed manufacturing processes and cleanrooms. They also enjoyed a hands-on technology experience involving Indium’s patented nanotechnology material, NanoFoil, according to the release.
Indium will continue promoting manufacturing and education and career opportunities through its classroom speakers’ bureau. Through Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES and Herkimer BOCES, Indium will provide classroom speakers to area schools. Speakers will talk to students about the importance of a STEM education for careers in advanced manufacturing. Each speaker will focus on the various skill sets needed to support a manufacturing facility, and the importance of each to the success of the company and the student. Career discussions will focus on engineering and technology, human resources, marketing and communications, accounting, information technology and safety and environmental.
National Manufacturing Day is designed to expand a community’s knowledge about, and enhance peoples’ awareness of, manufacturing careers and their value to the local, regional and national economy, according to the release.
