  • Thanks to a $2,000 Arts in Education Grant awarded by Target, Harry Hoag Elementary School plans to bring in musician Dave Ruch for a two-day residency this year.
Ruch will design a program to explore various themes at each grade level, and will also perform four concerts.
This is the fourth year he will perform at the school.
His program for each grade will include the following:
    • Grades K-1 — Songs from our Communities. Students will move, laugh, clap and sing as they hear songs and stories from communities near and far. Ruch will reinforce a social studies unit on communities and neighborhoods.
    • Grades 2-3 — World Communities. Students will experience an Indian tabla drum, an exotic stringed instrument from Europe, a Native American traditional instrument and more as they sing in various languages, answer questions and think about and discuss ways in which we are all similar. Ruch will also present information about his trip to Asia.
    • Grade 4 — The Native Americans of New York. With his guitar and some traditional Iroquois instruments, Ruch will lead students on a musical journey into history. Students will become active participants in their own learning as they sing along, answer questions and act out songs. Topics covered will include the Iroquois’ use of their surroundings to meet their basic needs for food, clothing and shelter, and the forced relocation of the Iroquois to reservations.
    • Grades 5 - 6 — Regions of the United States. The program will feature interactive songs, stories and musical instruments from various regions of the country along with opportunities for students to show off what they know.
During his second day at the school, fourth and fifth grade students will participate in songwriting sessions on New York’s Native Americans. The fifth and sixth grade students will also participate in songwriting sessions on regions of the United States or another topic of teacher interest.
