  • The Henderson-General Nicholas Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced the kick-off of this year’s Good Citizen and scholarship award program for outstanding high school seniors at their Aug. 27 business meeting at the German Flatts Town Park.
Herkimer Junior-Senior High School, West Canada Valley Central School, Owen D. Young Central School and Poland Central School should have received the paperwork by Oct. 1.
The DAR Good Citizen award and scholarship contest, created in 1934, is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship that include dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. Each high school selects the senior they feel best meets these standards of good citizenship.
Although the writing of an essay is not mandatory, if the student should choose to write and submit an essay, the student is then eligible to have their essay judged first by the chapter, with the winning essay sent on to the next level. The student who’s essay wins on the national level wins the right to go to National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution offices in Washington, D.C., where they will be presented with a scholarship.
The Henderson-Gen. Nicholas Herkimer Chapter will conduct its award ceremony and celebration for the Good Citizen award winners in April 2014.
