  • DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. — A few changes at halftime sparked a strong second half for Dolgeville Saturday and the undefeated Blue Devils scored a 30-14 crossover win against Frankfort-Schuyler’s Maroon Knights.
The Blue Devils trailed 8-6 at halftime at Bynon Field but took the lead with the opening drive of the third quarter and kept the pressure on the Maroon Knights.
“The defensive adjustment by Brian Wilcox was fantastic,” said Dolgeville coach Dan Zilkowski who celebrated his birthday with his team’s fifth win in five tries. “A lot of the credit goes to the offensive line; in the second half we controlled the line and they did a good job making holes.”
Devin Coonradt capped a 58-yard drive at the start of the second half with an 11-yard touchdown run that gave Dolgeville the lead. Jason Nastovski ran in the conversion and Dolgeville led 14-8.
The Blue Devils got the ball back on a punt and added to their lead when Coonradt took a short pass from Reid Johnson, shook a defender at the Frankfort-Schuyler 20 and ran down the right sideline for another touchdown which was followed by another Nastovski conversion.
Frankfort-Schuyler (3-2) came back with a quick scoring drive of its own, aided by a pass interference call. Joe DeSarro threw his second touchdown pas of the game, a 28-yarder to Mike Irons, and got his team back within eight points with 9:25 left to play. The Maroon Knights went for two points on the conversion and DeSarro threw incomplete with lineman James Brys dragging him down.
A 14-play Dolgeville scoring drive took seven minutes off the clock and all but extinguished Frankfort-Schuyler’s chances for a victory. Johnson’s 26-yard pass to Johann Doerrer allowed Dolgeville to convert on third-and-18 following a penalty. Nastovski later ran four yards on fourth-and-three. Nastovski eventually scored on a 13-yard run up the middle with less than 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Nastovski tacked on a two-point run and gave Dolgeville its final 16-point margin.
Dolgeville had scored first on a one-yard Nastovski touchdown run but missed the extra point. Frankfort-Schuyler took the lead when DeSarro threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Mitchel Shortt then passed to Irons for the conversion.
Nastovski ran for 163 yards on a season-high 35 carries.
“I played every second I could of ball-control,” Zilkowski said. “The longer we could keep the ball in our hands, the better.”
The Blue Devils ran 60 offensive plays to Frankfort-Schuyler’s 40. Coonradt added 91 yards on 17 carries. Johnson hit three of the five passes he attempted for 64 yards.
DeSarro was 9-for-18 for 115 yards and Justin Kiesow led the Frankfort-Schuyler running attack with 57 yards on five carries.
Both teams return to league play with home games in Week 6. Frankfort-Schuyler hosts Clinton in Class C East Friday and Dolgeville takes on defending league champion West Canada Valley with a chance to clinch the Class D East title Saturday.
