  • LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — The Little Falls Mounties search for a victory is over. For the Mt. Markham Mustangs, the search goes on.
Little Falls triumphed 14-13 at home Saturday in a meeting of winless Class C East foes. The Mounties (1-4, 1-4, C East) took the lead in the middle of the fourth quarter and held on when Mt. Markham (0-5, 0-4 C East) was unable to convert on a two-point try following a late touchdown.
Little Falls pinned Mt. Markham deep in its own end with a punt to start the fourth quarter and forced the Mustangs to kick the ball back from their 15-yard line. Taking possession at their 47, the Mounties marched down the field in seven plays, including runs of 11 and 14 yards by Devin Dawley. Travis Dawley’s 10-yard run set up first-and-goal and he scored from five yards out on the next play.
Leading for the first time at 12-8, the Mounties went for two points and Travis Dawley, who had also scored the team’s first touchdown, ran in the conversion.
Mt. Markham responded with a scoring drive of its own, marching 60 yards in six plays with the help of a facemask penalty against the Mounties. The Mustangs faced second down only once on the drive and pulled within one point on Mike Tanzillo’s two-yard touchdown run. Looking for the lead, the Mustangs also opted for a two-point try and Tyler Ostrander’s throw landed beyond the reach of Eric Taylor-Holmes.
Trailing 8-6 at halftime, the Mounties made a defensive stand in the middle of the third quarter and kept the margin at two points. Starting at midfield, Mt. Markham drove down the field and had a first down at the Little Falls 2. A false start pushed the Mustangs back five yards and a hold on Tanzillo’s would-be seven-yard touchdown run moved them back five more. Two short runs left Mt. Markham with third-and-goal from the 11 where Ostrander’s pass went over Taylor-Holmes and landed incomplete.
The Mustangs lined up for a 29-yard field goal try By Dillion Bleaking and faked it. Adam Rodick took the snap and raced toward the left end of the line where he was grabbed from behind by Devin Dawley for a four-yard loss.
Mt. Markham fumbled the ball away on the game’s second play from scrimmage but drove 74 yards for the game’s first score when it got the ball back. Senior linebacker Josh Fargo lined up in the backfield and plowed into the end zone from one yard out with Bleaking adding the extra point on a kick.
The key play on the drive was a 22-yard Ostrander-to-Kyle Yager pass on third-and-22.
Little Falls’ first points came on a drive that started at the Mt. Markham 43 in the middle of the second quarter. Travis Dawley ran 31 yards for the touchdown on his first carry of the game. The Mounties faked a kick on the extra point and Derek Raux’s pass fell incomplete, leaving Mt. Markham with a two-point lead.
Page 2 of 2 - The clock started running early on the ensuing kickoff and 48 seconds ticked off before Little Falls’ coaches got it stopped. The game’s officials opted not to put time back on the game clock and left Mt. Markham with 2:27 when the next drive started at the Mustangs’ 36. Taylor-Holmes ran 22 yards on the first play and Ostrander threw a six-yard pass to Josh Urtz to extend the drive on fourth-and-four from the Mounties’ 35. Hurrying to beat the clock, the Mustangs would advance no further as Ostrander was sacked first by Zack Crane and later by Andy Mucica on two of the final three plays of the half.
Travis Dawley ran for 72 yards on eight carries for Little Falls. Devin Dawley had 20 carries for 64 yards and threw a 10-yard pass to his cousin out of the Mounties’ wildcat package.
The Mounties are bringing in portable lights for Week 6 and will play at home Friday night against Morrisville-Eaton/Hamilton. Adults will be charged $1 for admission to the 7 p.m. contest to help offset the cost of renting the lights.
Mt. Markham will also play at home Friday when the Mustangs take on Holland Patent.
