Gravity, the new Alfonso Cuaron movie about an astronaut stranded in space, set a new record for an October opening at the box office this weekend, raking in a whopping $55.6 million. It's also the biggest debut for stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, Box Office Mojo reports.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 dropped from the top spot last week to No. 2 this week with $21.5 million.
Faring less well than Gravity in its debut was Runner Runner, which flopped with a meager $7.6 million in earnings, landing at No. 3. Prisoners and Rush each fell two places, down to No. 4 and No. 5 with $5.7 million and $4.4 million in receipts, respectively.
In sixth place with $4.16 million was Don Jon, which fell nearly 50 percent in its second week. It narrowly edged out Baggage Claim, which brought in $4.12 million in its second week.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Insidious Chapter 2 (No. 8, $3.9 million), Pulling Strings (No.9, $2.5 million) and Enough Said (No. 10, $2.15 million).
