EAST HERKIMER, N.Y. — Tuesday’s match went scoreless into the middle of the second overtime period before Herkimer’s Magicians defeated Frankfort-Schuyler 1-0 on a McKenzie Pine goal.
Neither team could find the net through 80 minutes of regulation play nor the first 10 minutes of overtime. The lone goal capped a play that started at the far end of the field with a Herkimer goal kick. Frankfort-Schuyler broke up the initial rush but Magician Maddie Renshaw settled the ball outside the penalty area when the Maroon Knights played it out of the box. Renshaw led Pine into the left side of the box with a pass along the ground and Pine scored with a shot to the near post at the 95:42 mark.
Herkimer had dominated possession during the first overtime period but Frankfort-Schuyler narrowly missed its one chance to take the lead. Alexis Bianchi broke free behind the defense and sent a shot from outside the box off the crossbar with 1:18 left in the period. Herkimer goalkeeper Chelsea Jory then saved a follow-up shot by Maroon Knight Simone Palumbo.
Jory finished with five saves in the shutout. Cassandra Grippe had eight saves for the Maroon Knights (2-7-1). Herkimer (4-3-1) had an 11-9 shot advantage and an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.
Frankfort-Schuyler plays at home Thursday against Dolgeville. Herkimer travels to Cooperstown Thursday.
