  • That didn’t last long.
Mercy Flight Central has stopped flying helicopters out of its base in Schuyler, which opened in March.
The nonprofit medical evacuation helicopter service will continue to serve this area from its bases in Marcellus and Canandaigua.
Officials characterized the situation as a suspension of operations until further notice due to corporate restructuring.
“Our plan is to evaluate options to provide more localized coverage during the suspension,” said Erin Van Zummeren, program director.
Officials had announced the opening of the Schuyler base in February at a press conference at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. During the conference, a med evac helicopter landed on the hospital’s helipad. Officials predicted that the new base would save lives through faster response times.
