Holmes & Co. is a Blog for Independent Minds, a place for a free-flowing discussion of policy, news and opinion. This blog is the online cousin of the Opinion section of the MetroWest Daily News in Framingham, Mass. As such, our focus starts there and spreads to include Massachusetts, the nation and the world. Since successful blogs create communities of readers and writers, we hope the \x34& Co.\x34 will also come to include you.

Here’s what passes for news:

“The official says Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi have been invited to the meeting. The official says Obama will urge the House to pass a spending bill to allow the government to reopen”

I’m not sure when Barry is going to get the message that talking to Boehner is useless. Boehner is done. Boehner is toast. Barry can urge Boehner all he wants, but what Barry really needs to be doing is talking to the Republicans who feel snubbed by, for example, meetings like this, while they are cheered on by the folks back home in their safe seats. So Barry can urge Boehner to pass a spending bill, and Boehner can tell Barry that he likes his leadership post, and then they can all play pinochle.
