  • A former Herkimer resident who grew up as an only child is now searching for her only immediate family members - the older brother and sister she never met.
Tina Powell Stanley, of Salisbury, N.C., has launched a search using social media for the twins who were born July 25, 1959, in Herkimer Memorial Hospital. A news article that appeared in The Telegram two days after their birth noted the twins, born to Stanley’s parents, Dorothy and John Powell, were the second set of twins born at the hospital in a week. The Powell twins, whose birth names were Dennis John Powell and Denise Marie Powell, were born at 11:22 and 11:37 a.m. and weighed 2 pounds, 3 ounces and 2 pounds, 5 ounces.
Their parents left the babies at the hospital, possibly for financial reasons. Stanley’s father died when she was 12 and she didn’t learn about the twins until she was in her mid-20s. Her mother found the subject painful and Tina respected her mom’s wishes and did not search for the twins until after her mother died a couple of years ago.
“I don’t know if they were separated,” said Stanley.
She was able to talk to one of the twins born prior to her siblings to ask if his parents might have remembered anything that would help her.
“They were going to ask around,” she said.
The former Dorothy Ilene Trautner was born in Amsterdam and grew up in Little Falls. She married John Edward Powell on Oct. 11, 1957. The couple resided in Ilion. Tina was born 10 years after the twins and graduated from Herkimer High School in 1987. She moved to North Carolina nine years ago.
Stanley posted information about her search on Facebook on July 25 - the twins’ birthday. “I had an outpouring of people trying to help me,” she said.
She has also registered with the New York State Registry and the International Soundex Reunion Registry and checks in on those websites for leads. Stanley has also conducted research on Ancestry.com.
“They’re the only full-blooded family I have,” said Stanley.
She said there is also some family medical history her brother and sister might want to know about.
