  • BOYS' SOCCER: Poland wins Hamilton's Optimist Cup

  • HAMILTON, N.Y. The Poland Tornadoes defeated Hamilton/Morrisville-Eaton 2-1 Saturday to claim the Hamilton Optimist Cup in a showdown of state-ranked and undefeated squads.
    Playing for the third day in a row, Poland (8-0-0) scored first and shut its hosts out in the second half. Mark Hennings broke a 1-all tie with a header off a corner kick late in the first half.
    Mike Sypolt had scored first for the Tornadoes and Hamilton/Morrisville-Eaton pulled even four minutes later with a goal scored by Brian Meeks.
    Hamilton/Morrisville-Eaton (4-1-0) entered the week ranked eighth in the state in Class C. Poland is No. 2 in Class D.
    The Tornadoes take on Mt. Markham Thursday at SUNYIT.
