FRANKFORT, N.Y. — The Frankfort-Schuyler Maroon Knights had more than 600 yards of offense Friday in a back-and-forth 60-35 win over the Holland Patent Golden Knights.
The undefeated Maroon Knights topped 50 points for the second time in three games. They led 20-0 in the opening minute of the second quarter and never trailed but led by only a touchdown at the start of the final period.
Holland Patent closed to within seven points at 42-35 on Marc Grogan’s second touchdown run, a three-yarder with 13 seconds left in the third quarter.
A pair of turnovers helped Frankfort-Schuyler (3-0, 3-0 C East) pull away in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Joe DeSarro ran 16 yards for a touchdown early in the period and the Maroon Knights got the ball back when Justin Kiesow intercepted a Cody Bliss. Kiesow ran the ball back to the Golden Knights’ 25-yard line and two plays later Mitchell Shortt ran 12 yards for his third touchdown of the night. Josh Roberts ended Holland Patent’s next drive with another interception but the Maroon Knights were forced to take possession at their own 6 after an inadvertent whistle blew the play dead. Kiesow then completed the scoring with a 96-yard touchdown run.
Kiesow, Shortt and DeSarro all ran for more than 100 yards and DeSarro threw for 150 with two more touchdowns. DeSarro had 168 yards on 11 carries, Shortt 152 on 24 and Kiesow 138 on six.
“I think the kids executed very well,” Frankfort-Schuyler coach Jeff LaGase said. “We played very well up front. ... Our execution on the line gave us chances to get through the first level and once Joe and Mitchel and Justin got through that first level they made big plays.”
Roberts’ interception was the third of the night for the Maroon Knights. DeSarro had one in the first half and almost had a second late in the game when he was hit as the ball arrived. DeSarro needed attention on the field after the play and left the game without returning. Five plays later, the Holland Patent drive ended when Roberts picked off another pass near the goal line.
“When we had to make some plays,” LaGase said, “we made them.”
Kiesow’s 10-yard touchdown run and Shortt’s conversion had given Frankfort-Schuyler an 8-0 lead in the first quarter. Shortt ran 26 yards for his first touchdown on the final play of the period then scored again 55 seconds of play later after Holland Patent turned the ball over at the 1-yard line on a bad punt snap.
The Maroon Knights led 28-14 at halftime and added DeSarro’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Rich Marocco early in the third quarter. DeSarro’s 54-yard touchdown run made it a 42-21 game but a long touchdown pass and Grogan’s short run brought the Golden Knights back within seven points.
