  • BOYS' SOCCER ROUNDUP: West Canada Valley wins in Herkimer

  • EAST HERKIMER, N.Y. — The West Canada Valley Indians broke a scoreless tie in the closing seconds of the first half then added two goals in the first eight minutes of the second on the way to a 5-1 win over the Herkimer Magicians Monday.
    Chase Roesler scored a goal assisted by Matt Zbytniewski with 4.7 seconds on the clock to give the Indians a 1-0 lead. Herkimer had been called for a handball near midfield, giving West Canada Valley a direct kick with less than 18 seconds left to play. The Indians played the ball forward to the right side of the box where Zbytniewski got it to Roesler for the goal.
    The close score at the break did not reflect the flow of play which saw West Canada Valley outshoot Herkimer 14-1.
    Alex Williams and George Youngs gave the Indians two quick goals at the start of the second half. Williams scored with an assist from Youngs on a rush up the middle of the field. Youngs’ goal capped an end-to-end rush started by a long throw from goalkeeper Michael Sternberg to Williams who pushed the ball up the field for Youngs.
    Matt Borocsi and Jacob Gorinshek added goals three minutes apart to put the Indians up 5-0.
    Zoltan Csonknyay scored for Herkimer with 10 minutes left to play in the match.
    Dan Netti made his first start in goal for Herkimer and had nine saves in 60 minutes. Ryan Stilwell had one save in the final 20 minutes.
    Sternberg had two saves for West Canada Valley.
    West Canada Valley takes on Old Forge Wednesday at home. The Magicians play at home Friday against Little Falls.
    OWEN D. YOUNG 5, COOPERSTOWN 1
    SPRINGFIELD CENTER, N.Y. — Bradlee Edick scored three times Monday in the undefeated Owen D. Young Wildcats’ 5-1 victory over the Cooperstown Hawkeyes.
    Edick had an assist to go with his three goals and the Wildcats led 4-1 at halftime. Matthew Cristman scored the other two goals for Owen D. Young which is now 4-0-0. Tyler Werperchowski and Ryan Crouse each had an assist while goalkeeper Andrey Drozdov made three saves.
    Tanner Clinton scored for Cooperstown with an assist from Park Summers. Kevin Frevele made eight saves.
    The Wildcats’ next match is Friday at home against Waterville.
    POLAND 10, LiITTLE FALLS 0
    POLAND, N.Y. — Nine players scored goals for the Poland Tornadoes Monday in a 10-0 win over the Little Falls Mounties.
    The Tornadoes, ranked second in the first Class D poll of the season released Monday by the New York State Sportswriters Association, ran their record to 5-0-0 with the win. Poland is ranked behind only Section VII Chazy.
    The teams played eight-on-eight Monday as the injury-depleted Mounties returned to the field for the first time in more than a week. Little Falls goalkeeper Cole Douglas made 21 saves in the match.
    Page 2 of 2 - Sean Loveless had two goals for Poland, Branden Garrett and Andrew Taverne each had a goal and two assists and Dustin DuBrule contributed three assists. Cameron Tabor and Mike Sypolt each had a goal and an assist, Ross Agen, Zach Gauthier, Mark Hennings and Quentin McKerrow each had a goal, and Bryce Wenzel had an assist. Neither Mitch Jones, Gauthier nor Finn Morrissey recorded a save.
    Poland heads to Hamilton Wednesday for the first round of Optimist Tournament play. Little Falls has a match scheduled at home Wednesday against Westmoreland.
    ADIRONDACK 3, FRANKFORT-SCHUYLER 0
    BOONVILLE, N.Y. — Sage Bailey made seven saves for Adirondack Monday in the Wildcats’ 3-0 shutout victory over Frankfort-Schuyler’s Maroon Knights.
    Gabe Garrastazu, Kyle Swiecki and Gavin Merriam each scored a goal for Adirondack (3-1-1) which led 2-0 at halftime. Ryan Dellerba added an assist.
    Jared Vu made 12 saves for Frankfort-Schuyler (0-4-1).
    The Maroon Knights take on Holland Patent at home Wednesday.
    RICHFIELD SPRINGS 2, GiILBERTSVILLE-MT. UPTON 1
    RICHFIELD SPRINGS, N.Y. — The Richfield Springs Indians tallied twice in the final four minutes of the first half Monday and defeated Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton 2-1. for their first win of the season.
    Trailing 1-0, the Indians (1-2-0) tied the score on a penalty kick at the 36:04 mark. Thomas Worobey scored what proved to be the winning goal with an assist from Josh Young 48 seconds before halftime.
    Galen Wind had scored for Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton in the 10th minute of play.
    Richfield Springs plays at home again Wednesday against Franklin.
    MAYFIELD 5, CANAJOHARIE 0
    CANAJOHARIE, N.Y. — Todd Briggs scored two goals for Mayfield Monday and the Panthers defeated the Canajoharie Cougars 5-0.
    Josh Ivancic and Matthew Messina each scored a goal and James Sweeney added a goal after moving out to play the field; Sweeney was also credited with eight saves in the shutout. Riley Yager had two assists.
    Zachary Young had 10 saves for Canajoharie.
    The Cougars play at Saratoga Catholic Wednesday.
