The finishing touches for the second phase of the Herkimer Central School District’s capital project are still in the works.
Superintendent Robert Miller said during a telephone interview on Thursday the school board heard from Jack Roepnack, project representative, during a meeting Wednesday.
“We are behind in a few areas,” said Miller. “The various contractors have to work together to get things completed, and that takes some coordination.”
Miller also said the contractors now have to work around students being back in school.
Roepnack talked about the status of the project during a telephone interview on Friday.
At the elementary school, he said a new boiler has been installed and cleaned, and that it has increased insulation and new jacketing. Also newly installed is a complete domestic hot water system and a new fire alarm system. Direct digital controls have been installed for heating in all of the elementary classrooms.
Mulch has been added to the main playground, and workers are currently in the process of improving access to the little playground, said Roepnack. Plus, asphalt work on the front parking lot has been completed.
At the bus garage, a new heating system is being installed - which Roepnack said is 85 percent complete - along with a new domestic hot water heater. Two, long bus parking concrete pads have also been completed, one on the north side and one on the west side, he said.
At the high school, the network has been upgraded school and district wide.
Pool renovations are nearly complete, which include a pool dehumidifer and new lighting, which Roepnack said brings the pool up to code requirements. He also said a new ceiling has been installed. Roepnack said the pool, which was originally installed in 1957, will be ready for use in the next few weeks.
Wireless Internet in the high school and elementary school is completed.
Roepnack also said the high school softball field upgrades are being completed.
Roepnack said they hope to be “substantially completed” with Phase 2 by the end of September or the beginning of October.
Voters approved the multi-million dollar project in 2009. The first phase included improvements to the elementary school, which needed some emergency work to the air conditioning unit.
Earlier this month, the school board voted to enter into a shared facilities director arrangement with Herkimer BOCES. Miller said hiring a new manager was initially discussed in August after the Herkimer BOCES building and grounds supervisor retired earlier this year. The school district’s building and grounds supervisor retired two years ago, but the school board held off filling the position since it was in the midst of merger talks at the time.
Page 2 of 2 - “We are in the process of finding the right candidate,” said Miller.
He said the person hired for the position would be in charge of maintenance operations at the school district and at BOCES. He said this would include four buildings - the Herkimer BOCES building, Herkimer Elementary School, Herkimer Jr.-Sr. High School and the bus garage - and the athletic facilities.
Miller also said the school district is currently looking to hire two to three new bus drivers. He said while they are managing now, they would like about more drivers to help out on the routes. He said those hired will be trained if they are not already certified.
