  • SCHOLASTIC FOOTBALL: Indians bounce back with win in Week 2

  • COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — The West Canada Valley offense got going Saturday and the Indians bounced back from their season-opening loss to beat the Cooperstown Hawkeyes 34-0.
    West Canada Valley (1-1, 1-1 D East) the defending Class D East champion, was shut out at home by Herkimer in its opener but its defense has not allowed a point in six quarters.
    Ryan Grogan played an expanded role in the Indians’ running game and amassed 132 yards on 14 carries to lead the team; he scored touchdowns on a five-yard run and a 17-yard pass from Ryan Moody.
    Brandon Roberts ran five yards for the first West Canada Valley touchdown and Grogan’s first score put the Indians up 14-0 in the first quarter. A touchdown run by Moody bumped the lead to 21-0 at halftime.
    Treyten Borden also ran for a touchdown and combined with Roberts to give the Indians 94 yards on 16 carries.
    Grogan and Cole Smith each intercepted a pass as West Canada Valley limited Cooperstown (0-2, 0-2 D East) to 90 yards of offense.
    West Canada Valley travels north for a non-league game at Lowville Academy Friday. Cooperstown is on the road Saturday for a game against Dolgeville.
