NEWPORT, N.Y. — Chase Roesler scored three goals Sunday and led the West Canada Valley Indians to a 4-2 victory over Notre Dame of Utica to claim the championship at the West Canada Valley Kickoff Classic.
The Indians (1-0-1) led 2-0 at halftime and maintained a two-goal cushion through the second half.
Roesler opened the scoring in the final 10 minutes of the first half when he played a deep throw-in off his body and into the net. Alex Williams added a goal four minutes later when he took a pass from Korey Mizener while crossing the 18-yard line, beat two defenders and buried his shot.
Roesler’s second goal made the score 3-0 and his third made it 4-1.
Goalkeeper Michael Sternberg made two saves in the win for the Indians and Notre Dame (1-2-1) got a pair of goals from Dara Chhit.
Roesler was rewarded with the tournament’s offensive most valuable player award. Senior classmate Josh Sudakow was the defensive MVP.
The tournament championship is West Canada Valley’s first since 2010. Notre Dame defeated the Indians in last year’s final.
