SAUQUOIT, N.Y. — Jenna Mazza scored two second-half goals for Sauquoit Valley Monday and the Indians defeated Poland 2-1 in a Center State Conference crossover match between reigning Section III champions.
The loss came in the first match of the season for Poland (0-1-0), the 2012 state Class D champion. Sauquoit Valley won the section’s Class C title last fall.
The teams played a scoreless first half, but Sauquoit Valley started to assert its speed advantage on the wings early in the first 40 minutes to take control of the game.
Sauquoit Valley outshot Poland 22-3.
“We kept knocking on the door and it’s got to open,” Sauquoit Valley coach Tim Clive said.
Mazza opened the door for the Indians (2-1-0) with her first goal in the 18th minute of the second half, volleying a shot to the far upper corner of the net from 30 yards out. Her second goal with 12:30 left on an assist from Nakeya Stedman, a speedy junior, who, along with Abbey Mielnicki, created speed mismatches for the Poland defenders.
“They’ve got athletes,” Poland coach Tom Basel said. “They’ve got great athletes.”
Shiane Irwin got Poland on the board with 5:52 left to play.
Poland goalkeeper Courtney Green and the Tornadoes’ defense was under considerable pressure for most of the game. Green finished with 13 saves. Alyson Gaffney had four saves for Sauquoit.
Poland is back on the field Friday, when it hosts Owen D. Young. Sauquoit Valley is at Westmoreland Wednesday.
Poland and Sauquoit meet one more time this season. That match will be played Sept. 26 in Poland.
