POLAND, N.Y. — Senior Mark Hennings had two goals and two assists for Poland Wednesday and Section III’s defending Class D champions opened the season with a 6-0 shutout of the Mt. Markham Mustangs.
Hennings assisted on a goal scored by Dustin DuBrule and added one of his own to give Poland a 2-0 halftime lead at home. He added his second assists and second goal 58 seconds apart in the second half, setting up a Ross Agen goal first as the Tornadoes’ lead jumped from two goals to four.
Finn Morrissey and Sean Loveless added goals later in the second half for Poland. Morrissey scored off a rebound on a breakout after goalie Mitch Jones stopped a penalty kick by Mustang Devan Palmer. Following a takedown inside the box, Jones made the initial save and corralled the ball. He then punted up the field, starting a rush by the Tornadoes and Morrissey scored off the right wing after Mt. Markham’s Mike Gras laid out to stop the initial shot.
The penalty kick led to one of Jones’ three saves in the shutout. Gras countered with 12 saves for Mt. Markham.
The Mustangs host their annual Optimist Tournament Friday and Saturday. Poland plays at home again Tuesday against West Canada Valley; both teams won division titles last year but are now in one division under the Center State Conference’s latest alignment.
