  • Youker family meets for 114th reunion

  • Country/Western Time was celebrated with hats, boots, guns, covered wagons and a jail at the firemen’s pavilion in Salisbury Center on Aug. 18.
    Approximately 75 people from local towns, as well as from Virginia and Arkansas, attended the 114th Youker family reunion.
    Grace was given by Carolyn Brown. All enjoyed a covered dish meal, hosted by Fredricka and Albert Johnson and family.
    The business meeting opened with prayer by acting President Carolyn Brown, the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of “God Bless America.”
    The flag displayed was given by Leonard Youker and son, James, in 1987 to use for future reunions. Leonard Youker served on the USS Nevada at Pearl Harbor, where the flag had flown.
    Secretary - Treasurer Elizabeth Amthor gave the minutes and the financial report.
    Historian Marlene Seifried reported the following: • Deaths: Harold “Red” Gray, Jr. on Jan. 2; Pamela Jean Griffin Hayden on Jan. 21; Joann R. Hotaling on Feb.16; Kenneth Dean Jobe on March 3; and Daryl Martin Griffin on Aug. 12.
    • Births: Nathan Emery Maskell on Jan. 31 to Tim and Elizabeth Gage Maskell; Destini Grace Kolpack on March 9 to Jason Patrick and Jessica Lynne Brown Kolpack; and Addison Joy DesGrosiellers on July 26 to Jerome and Sammi Rose Boepple DesGrosiellers, Jr.
    • Marriages: Sammi Rose Boepple to Jerome DesGrosiellers, Jr. on Jan. 11; Jeremy Asa Doxstader to Kimberly Lynn Martin on June 8; and Jen Wheelock Schorer to Joseph Jasek on June 22.
    The following received gifts:
    • Oldest Man: Joseph Steciak (92); Oldest Woman: Beulah Sless (92); Youngest: Addison Joy DesGrosiellers (3 weeks); and Farthest Traveled: Kenneth Youker and friend, Pat Ruski (Arkansas).
    Each child younger than 10 years of age chose a toy from a bag for children only.
    Joyce Youker shared that James Youker had officially become an active member of Santa’s Drill Team. He will represent the U.S. Coast Guard by carrying their colors during performances. His first performance was in Santa Claus, Ind., in March.
    Fredricka and Albert Johnson will host next year’s reunion and the officers will include Sarah Schuyler Busch, president; Tim Brown, Sr., vice president; Elizabeth Amthor, secretary - treasurer; Marlene Seifried, historian; and Arnold Brown, chaplain. Newly elected president Sarah Busch shared the theme for the 115th reunion will be “Patriotic.”
    Many theme baskets, made by different family members in attendance, were sold during the silent auction.
    Barry Gage led the group in singing two verses of the “Youker Anniversary Song,” written by Emma Spencer in 1903.
    The day ended with a moment of silence in remembrance of those who died and a closing prayer by acting President Carolyn Brown.
    The 115th reunion will take place at the firemen’s pavilion in Salisbury Center on Aug. 17, 2014. Ming and Ward Seeley will barbecue chicken for the special occasion. Attendees are asked to bring a poem to read or a song to sing. Attendees are also invited to perform a skit for all to see.
