  • The Otsego Dance Society begins its fall season with a contradance being held on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown. The band will be Idlewild, with Michael Kernan calling.
Idlewild is a 4-piece band from the Binghamton area, made up of Tom Quigley on fiddle & guitar, his wife Marie on bass, Amy Shapiro playing fiddle and Danielle Spindler Swart providing guitar backup.
They have been playing traditional tunes together for many years in various groupings and now their newly-formed band is simply 'old hands in a new circle', offering a lively and imaginative sound, full of musical surprises.
Mike is a long-time contradancer from Albany who started calling a few years ago. Since his initial guest spots at local venues, he has called at numerous dances and festivals in Massachusetts and eastern New York, including regular appearances at Parting Glass in Saratoga Springs.
Contradancing is a traditional New England dance form that is social, easy to learn, and loads of fun. Singles, couples and families of all ages are welcome. No experience is needed, since all dances are taught and walked through.
Dancing begins at 8 p.m. and continues until 11 p.m., with a short break for refreshments. Beginners should come on time, since there is more instruction during the earlier dances.
Suggested donation is $8 for adults, $4 for students and teen-agers and free for children 12 and under. The Presbyterian Church is on the corner of Pioneer and Church streets.
