NEW HARTFORD — Hospice & Palliative Care is offering an early registration opportunity for a free volunteer training class this fall, Wednesdays, Oct. 9 to Nov. 6, from 6:15 to 9:15 p.m., in Herkimer.
Pre-registration and interview are required.
Carpooling will be available from New Hartford.
Kate Doran, volunteer services supervisor at Hospice, said, “If you look around the table at a Hospice & Palliative Care volunteer training session, you’ll see people from all walks of life. Ask them why they volunteer and you’ll get a variety of reasons or circumstances that bring them to volunteer training. The one common thread you’ll find in all of their stories is that they want to help others.”
Volunteer training educates new volunteers about Hospice and Palliative Care and the role they will play as part of the Hospice and Palliative Care team.
Volunteers may spend a few hours a week in the patients’ homes providing companionship to the patient or a needed break for the caregiver. Often volunteers help with light housekeeping, fix a small meal or run errands. Volunteers also assist at the hospice office, the Siegenthaler Center or in the hospice bereavement program. Volunteers choose assignments that best suit their time, skills and interests.
