  • The Herkimer County Fair is blending tradition and new ideas with a week of Cowboys and Carousels.
The fair opens at 3 p.m. Tuesday and runs through Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds in Frankfort.
The theme Cowboys and Carousels is inspired by the addition of a rodeo to the fair this year. At 7 p.m. Thursday, the first rodeo will take place at the fair; a children’s rodeo will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday.
There will be something for every member of the family to enjoy throughout the week, from scavenger hunts for the children to bingo for senior citizens, organizers said.
And along with the new activities, families can count on fair favorites such as impersonator Shania Twin, the demolition derby and, of course, traditional fair food.
“This is a family event,” Jerry Elthorp, treasurer of the Herkimer County Fair said. “A lot of families meet here every year. They sit and eat together and enjoy the entertainment together.”
But while the rides, displays and performances continue to draw crowds, the heart of the fair is still agricultural education.
There are shows and activities specifically for the youth such as the dairy, sheep and dairy goat shows where the kids can compete for ribbons and trophies.
“The best part of the fair,” Elthorp said, “is seeing the kids smiling when they are taking part in youth events, standing there with a trophy or ribbon in their hands.”
