  • Four people were arrested in Herkimer County in connection with two separate instances of welfare fraud, the Herkimer County Sheriff's Office’s Welfare Fraud Unit said.
In the first case, three people are accused of conspiring together to fraudulently claim several thousand dollars in childcare and other benefits.
Brian LaPone, 32, of Ilion, is charged with felony fourth-degree grand larceny, felony fourth-degree welfare fraud and felony first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, deputies said. LaPone allegedly received $2,880 in undue childcare benefits by submitting falsified day car time sheets to the Department of Social Services.
Brenda Chrisman, 49, of Little Falls, is accused of fraudulently signing and submitting day care time sheets for LaPone, showing she was the child care provider when she was not. Chrisman is charged with felony first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, deputies said.
The third person, 32-year-old Dana Davis, of Herkimer, allegedly failed to report income she was receiving as a day care provider — allowing her to fraudulently receive $2,422 worth of welfare benefits. She’s charged with felony fourth-degree welfare fraud and felony fourth-degree grand larceny, deputies said.
All three were released on appearance tickets and will return to Herkimer Village Court at a later date.
In a separate case, 34-year-old George Eissler, of Herkimer, is accused of submitting a document to the Department of Social Services stating his daughter was living with him when she was not, allowing him to receive $405 in additional cash assistance benefits, deputies said. Eissler was charged with felony first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, misdemeanor fifth-degree welfare fraud and misdemeanor petit larceny, deputies said. He was ticketed and will return to Herkimer Village Court at a later date.
