WHAT IS IT? Renovation and conversion of Shaaray Torah Synagogue to house its congregation and the congregation of Temple Israel, which sold its building to Malone University.

HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN GOING ON? On June 1, Temple Israel moved out of its building at 25th Street and Harvard Avenue NW and into the Jewish Community Center, just north on Harvard, said Rabbi Jon Adland. Now the congregation of Shaaray Torah has moved into the center while the building at Harvard and 30th Street NW is remodeled.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?  The two congregations will share the building after work is completed, hopefully in June, Adland said. Cantor Bruce Braun will continue to lead the synagogue’s congregation and Adland will lead the temple.
The congregations are not merging, and will worship separately, Adland said. The building will have two kitchens — one kosher, one not — for the two congregations. An umbrella organization, the Jewish Federation, also will be housed in the building, which will create office space with the $3 million project.
