1929 — Born Jan. 15, Atlanta, Ga.

1948 — Graduates from Moorehouse College; ordained into the ministry.

1951 — Enters graduate school at Boston University.

1953 — Marries Coretta Scott; moves to Montgomery, Ala., where he becomes pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.

1955 — Earned doctorate in systematic theology from Boston College cq; joins Montgomery Bus Boycott; elected president of the Montgomery Improvement Association.

1957 — Launches the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to fight Jim Crow.

1958 — Survives an assassination attempt in Harlem, N.Y.

1959 — Visits the family of Mohandes K. Gandhi in India; resigns from his pastorate, returns to Atlanta.

1960 — Becomes co-pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, with his father.

1962 — Arrested in Albany, Ga.

1963 — Arrested in Birmingham, Ala., for marching without a permit; pens “Letter from  Birmingham Jail;” delivers “I Have a Dream “ speech during March on Washington.

1964 — Named Time’s Man of the Year; attends signing of Civil Rights Act in the White House;  get attacked by Muslims in Harlem, receives Nobel Peace Prize.

1965 — Arrested in Selma, Ala.

1966 — Moves into a Chicago tenement to bring attention to poverty; leads March Against Fear, and campaigns against discrimination in Chicago.

1967 - Jailed for four days in Birmingham; starts the Poor People’s Campaign.

1968 — Delivers “The Mountain Top” speech; assassinated in Memphis.

1986 — President Ronald Reagan signs the King holiday into law.
