The second annual Miles for Missy — a 5-kilometer run and walk in memory of a former valley athlete, coach and teacher — will take place Saturday at Herkimer Elementary School in East Herkimer.
Missy Richvalsky Lasowski, a former three-sport athlete at Mohawk and a teacher and coach in the Herkimer Central School District, died of breast cancer in September 2010 at age 30.
The 5K run will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the walk will start five minutes later. An addition this year is a free half-mile children’s run at 8 a.m. Event organizers added the event because Lasowski taught first and sixth grades at Herkimer.
“I want to remind people the purpose of this is to keep her memory alive for many years to come, so people who never knew her could understand the kind of person she was, the kind of person, teacher and coach,” race director Abbie Sutliff said.
In 2011, Miles for Missy raised $12,000 that was divided among three charities: the Mohawk Valley Cancer Society and scholarships at Herkimer Elementary School and Mohawk High School.
"I’m hopeful we can hit that total,” Sutliff said. “I think people will kick it out at the end.”
Registrations are being accepted online at: http://tinyurl.com/7nc5bso. All registrants will be entered in a raffle for a variety of prizes and will receive a ticket to a Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs game.
